Willow (Salix) - a Crop for the Future The energy crop is exceptional in many ways. Willow is easy to plant, grow very fast and is easy to harvest with the modern machinery of today. There is a market for willow chips as a fuel in among others Nordic Country heating plants. Energy from biomass is getting more and more important as an energy ressource. Given the EU-goal that countries in Europe shall be more self-sufficient and further more manage the obligations due to the Kyoto agreement willow can gain an important role in the total energy supply. Willow plantations will be permanent and a natural part of the landscape.
Willow (Salix) - a profitable supplement Willow plantations can be a profitable complement to other crops and activities in agriculture and could provide a reasonable economy without large investments in machinery and specialized labour.
PPP (Public Private Partnership) between Municipalities with Wastewater Treatment plants, CHP and private farmers growing Energy Willows Irrigated and Fertilized with pre-treated Wastewater, Sludge and Human Urine could be of great mutual interest in better economy as well as ecology.
